The Department of Clinical Medicine at Faculty of Health at Aarhus University invites applications for a position as Clinical Chair Professor and Consultant in Internal Medicine: Gastroenterology and Hepatology as per November 1, 2021. The position is a combined position at Aarhus University, Aarhus University Hospital Department of Hepatology and Gastroenterology, and the Central Denmark Region. It is a permanent full-time position.

As a Clinical Chair Professor and chair at the Department of Clinical Medicine, you will be part of what is probably the largest health science research department in Denmark. Our clinical research covers all the medical specialties and takes place in close collaboration with the university hospital and the regional hospitals in the Central Denmark Region. We have approx. 30,000 square meters of modern research facilities for experimental surgery and medicine, animal facilities, and also advanced scanners at our disposal. The department has overall responsibility for the Master's degree programs in medicine and in molecular medicine. At the department we are approx. 425 academic employees and the same number of PhD students cooperating across disciplines. The Department of Hepatology and Gastroenterology employs 18 specialists in Hepatology and Gastroenterology and covers all subspecialties. The staff includes 4 clinical professors and 9 associate professors. The department educates a steady number of Ph.D.s and research year students. It publishes each year about 100 scientific original papers in leading medical and specialized journals. The research activity is increasing and is considered the core element in the maintenance and development of the department’s specialized clinical functions.
The Professor and Chair will be instrumental for the further success of research at the Department. The Department Vision is to provide ‘Research Based Action Against Disease’. The research is rooted in the daily clinical challenges and covers all levels from basic biology over clinical studies to clinical epidemiology. Historically, the specialty is a fusion of Gastroenterology and Hepatology and the Chair Professor will have equal responsibilities for driving the scientific development of both subspecialties.
Your job responsibilities
As Clinical Professor and chair you will have responsibility for the development of the department's research and teaching environment, and you will contribute to the implementation of the faculty's overall research strategy. You are expected to contribute – both independently and in collaboration with others – to the development of the department by leading research of high international quality and contribute towards ensuring a high academic and didactic standard. Qua your excellent collaborative skills and a broad academic network, you contribute to the academic development at Aarhus University and to the University’s profile both nationally and internationally.
Your job is described in detail in and regulated by the ’Agreement on Clinical Professors’ between Arhus University and the Central Denmark Region. . The central part of the new agreement is that you together with the head physician and the head nurse constitute the department leadership. The team members have equal and shared responsibilities and decision influence for all aspects of the department running, each making use of their different professional competences.
Your main tasks will consist of:
- Research of high international quality, including publication in top international journals and the communicating your research in national and international academic networks.
- To contribute to the external research funding.
- Assessment and committee work at Aarhus University.
- Research-based collaboration with private and public sector stakeholders as well as research-based consultancy.
- Dissemination of your research to the outside world.
- Ability to influence regional and governmental regulatory authorities.
- Further development of the diverse research activities at the Department. The success of the Department should be a driving force rather than the success of individuals.
- Leadership for teaching of medical students
- Responsibility for the development of the clinical specialties at the Department
- Participation in and contributions to the department leader team

You have established yourself as a prominent clinical researcher within gastroenterology and hepatology, and you possess solid research and teaching qualifications at a high international level. You have broad regional, national and international cooperative partnerships and great experience of research partnerships with private and public sector stakeholders. You have also documented ability to attract external funding.
As a person, you are a helpful and motivational leader who inspires other researchers and builds trusting relationships with students, colleagues and partners. As a lecturer you communicate the newest and relevant knowledge in a committed, clear and comprehensible manner. As a supervisor you are competent, inspiring, supportive and responsible.
You are ready to take co-responsibility for the development of the department's research and education at the highest international level and for maintaining a good work environment. You naturally involve yourself in interdisciplinary collaboration at departmental, faculty and university level as well as nationally and internationally.
Because of your central position in the leadership of all aspects of the department life you are expected to possess or acquire a relevant level of administrative skills and to make use of these in your job.
